After 2 seasons as a defensive back coach and 3 seasons as the Illinois defensive coordinator, Aaron Henry and the Illini have parted ways. Henry has decided to take the Notre Dame defensive back/co-defensive coordinator position. After a historic season by the Illini secondary in 2022, Illinois promoted Henry to defensive coordinator following the departure of Ryan Walters. In Henry's first season as the defensive coordinator, the Illini defense struggled. It was a young group and a first-time defensive coordinator, so it was not the most surprising outcome. The Illini defense in 2024 took a major leap, and it looked like Illinois promoted the right guy. The 2025 defense, while not as hyped as the offense, still was thought to be one of the better defenses in the preseason. The Illini returned 7 starters on defense. What was once a unit that was looked at quite fondly simply struggled. There were two games in particular that were inexcusable: Washington and Wisconsin. Illinois allowed 42 points to Washington, not even giving the offense a chance to keep up. A Wisconsin team with one of the worst offenses in the FBS and down to a 4th string quarterback scored 27 of their 81 Big Ten points. In the other 8 conference games, Wisconsin scored an average of 6.75 points per game. In the final two games of the season the defense had strong showings that helped Illinois retain the Land of Lincoln Trophy and a Music City Bowl win. Despite this, the damage was too much, and fans still wanted Henry gone. The biggest gripe was the constant failure to get off the field on 3rd and long. After the ups and downs, both Henry and Illinois are off in different directions.
Illinois has gone out and found their new guy. Former Montana head coach Bobby Hauck will step into the position. Hauck is 61 years old and has nearly 4 decades of coaching experience at the division 1 level. The Missoula, Montana native played for his hometown school and had two stints there as the head coach. In a total of 15 years at Montana, Hauck left with a 151-43 record, 13 FCS Playoff appearances, 4 National Championship appearances. He retired from coaching 5 days ago, but it was not for longs as he is headed to Champaign. Hauck's scheme is a 3-3-5 known for aggressive blitz packages and a lot of man coverage. Illinois' defense is entering a new era.
