Zero-Star Recruit to Super Bowl Champion: Celebrating Devon Witherspoon's Historic Rise

When Devon Witherspoon arrived at the University of Illinois in the summer of 2019, few outside Champaign knew his name. In fact, most recruiting services didn’t know him at all. He was listed as a zero-star recruit

Witherspoon left Champaign as an All-American and 5th overall pick. Witherspoon's legacy is being a part of the dominant Illinois secondary in 2022 that produced 3 NFL Draft picks. But let's travel back in time to 2019.

Rather than let the lack of stars discourage him, Witherspoon embraced the challenge. At Illinois, he immediately got on the field, playing in all 13 games as a true freshman. In fact, he made one of the biggest tackles in school history. In Illinois' historic upset of #6 Wisconsin, Witherspoon made a game-saving shoestring tackle. The Illini trailed 20-14 with just over 12 minutes remaining. They were able to force a 3rd and 4 with a chance to get the ball back. Witherspoon got beat on a slant but never gave up. He was able to make a tackle with his fingertips at the goal line. Illinois forced Wisconsin to a field goal and scored 10 straight points to upset the Badgers.

By his junior and senior seasons, Witherspoon’s transformation was undeniable. In 2022, he broke out as one of the best cornerbacks in college football, earning Consensus All-America honors, being named the Big Ten’s Defensive Back of the Year, and placed as a Jim Thorpe Award Finalist. His senior season may never be replicated again by an Illini. Witherspoon's confidence was also other-worldly. Spoon Island was real, and he would let you know if you were on it. The sight of Witherspoon getting in the face of a wide receiver after a PBU will always be missed. Quarterbacks refused to throw his way at times and for good reasons.

That meteoric rise culminated in the 2023 NFL Draft, where Witherspoon was selected fifth overall by the Seattle Seahawks, a stunning achievement for a former zero-star recruit. He became not just a first-round pick, but the highest-drafted defensive back in Illinois history, an extraordinary leap from his recruitment profile just a few years earlier.

Fast forward to tonight, Witherspoon is a Super Bowl Champion. He didn't just play in the Super Bowl; he was a key piece in the secondary. Witherspoon recorded 1 sack and a 3 QB hits, one of which led to a pick-six and the game clincher. Adding to his winning pedigree, Witherspoon has been a 3x Pro-Bowler in his first 3 seasons. He is an excellent NFL defensive back. No one would have thought the zero-star from Pensacola, Florida would do this.

In an era obsessed with rankings and projections, Witherspoon became proof that greatness can’t always be measured early. From zero stars to a starter on a Super Bowl winning team, Witherspoon didn’t just beat the odds, he redefined them.
