Freshman Sensation Leads Illini in Win Over #4 Purdue

When you look back on the date 1/24/26, you are going to remember it as the "Keaton Wagler day." In their second game without senior guard Kylan Boswell, the Illini faced their toughest test of the season in a road tilt with #4 Purdue. With the Boilermakers coming off a loss and having a Saturday Mackey Arena crowd to rally behind, it felt like Illinois was going to need a miracle to hand Purdue its second straight loss. That's when Keaton Wagler finally put the entire nation on notice. It's been no secret for Illinois fans that Tyler Underwood and the Illini found a diamond in the rough, but the national attention has still been drawn towards other freshmen who were ranked higher in this amazing class. Keaton Wagler's historic 46-point night officially marks the day that every single person in America knows who he is. The hype train has officially left Champaign and it's making its way all across the country after Illinois' 88-82 victory over Purdue.

This game started out fast. These were the two best offenses in the country, and they both showed it early. Keaton Wagler scored 19 of the team's first 21 points, as the Boilermakers kept putting their bigs in an impossible position. Purdue had no answers for Wagler, but the Illini defense could not buy a stop on the other end. Purdue took an 11-point lead with 7 minutes remaining in the half, and it kind of felt like Illinois was due for a long night ahead once Keaton Wagler cooled down. The Illini hung around the rest of the half and were able to cut the lead to just 4 with back-to-back triples from Zvonimir Ivisic and Keaton Wagler. Wagler finished the half with 24 points, and at this point, it felt like Illinois was in a decent spot. The Purdue offense did whatever they wanted, but the score was only 43-39.

To open the second half, Keaton Wagler drilled another three off an offensive rebound to the dismay and groans of the 15,000 in Mackey Arena. A couple of possessions later, Jake Davis slid right around Fletcher Loyer to secure the offensive rebound and convert an easy uncontested layup, forcing Matt Painter to use a timeout and the Illini bench to erupt. For the next 13 minutes, Illinois and Purdue kept trading baskets, with no team being able to build a lead of more than 3 points. Braden Smith torched Illinois in the pick-and-roll, and Keaton Wagler showed no signs of stopping. The Shawnee, Kansas native reached 40 points with over 9 minutes left in the game. Illinois was also able to stay in the game because of their relentless pursuit on the offensive glass. Purdue simply could not box out all 4 Illini who crashed the glass after a shot, and it continues to be Illinois' biggest strength on offense.

With 4 minutes left, Illinois officially entered the danger zone. Braden Smith came off a screen and knocked down a three and on the following possession hit a fadeaway mid-range jumper to put Purdue up 73-68. I think at this moment all Illinois fans thought Wagler's heroics would have been for nothing, but this team continued to never back down. An Oscar Cluff hook and hold foul, seemingly made out of frustration over missed rebounds, revitalized Illinois. Illinois had a chance to tie or take the lead as they were granted two free throws and the ball. Tomislav Ivisic split the pair, as the Illini continued to struggle to make free throws. Tomi made up for it though by nailing a three to tie it at 73-73 with 3:31 remaining. Trey Kaufmann-Renn, who was bothered by David Mirkovic all night, was able to convert on a hook shot from 7 feet and put Purdue back up by 2. Keaton Wagler then made the play of the game in my opinion. With the shot clock winding down, Wagler did not force a contested 15-footer. Instead, Keaton made an incredible skip pass to Jake Davis, who got his defender flying with a shot fake, before hitting the go-ahead three. Illinois got a stop on defense and had a chance to put all the pressure on Purdue. Illinois' floor spacing proved to be too deadly for Purdue. Another late rotation led to a wide-open Mirkovic three and Illinois to go up 4. TKR answered, but for the fourth straight time down the court, a Keaton Wagler ball screen led to another open three for Illinois. Tomislav Ivisic hit another clutch three to give the Illini a 5-point lead. But before we could all celebrate, Braden Smith responded with a three of his own. With 44 seconds on the clock and trailing by 2, Purdue was able to play defense outright. Illinois put the ball in Wagler's hands. Wagler got ahead with steam and finished on a little push shot, reminiscent of Ayo Dosunmu against Penn State in 2020, to ice the game and forever cement his legacy on a Saturday afternoon.

While Keaton Wagler was the star of the show, other Illini stepped up late to help ease the load on Wagler. The four consecutive threes late were one of the craziest moments I've witnessed. That does not happen in Mackey against a top 5 Purdue team. Illinois also dominated Purdue on the glass. It was my biggest key to the game because it was thought that Purdue is just as good as Illinois on the glass, but yesterday it was most definitely false. Illinois won the battle of the boards 33-19, and offensively 13-3. The Illini are breaking basketball with their ability to gather their own misses. Illinois currently owns the highest adjusted offensive efficiency of all time on KenPom, with a rating of 130.5. For reference, the 2024-2024 Elite 8 squad only had a 125.5 rating. This offense is *insert Brad voice* ELITE.

What this means:

Well, after hearing the news of Kylan Boswell's injury, the general consensus among Illinois fans was that the Illini's Big Ten title chances were gone, but they could still earn a good seed for the NCAA Tournament and make a run. Yesterday's 88-82 win completely changes the season dynamic. Illinois is now 8-1 in the Big Ten and will very much be present at the top of the standings. As we approach the halfway point in Big Ten play, there are 6 teams who are in the conversation for a Big Ten title. 9-0 Nebraska, 8-1 Illinois, 8-1 Michigan, 8-1 Michigan State, 7-2 Purdue, and 6-2 Wisconsin have separated themselves from the rest of the league. It is now where those 6 teams will be separating themselves from each other. In this next week alone, we get to see Michigan vs. Nebraska, Michigan vs. Michigan State, and Nebraska vs. Illinois. It is go time for many of the teams at the top of the conference right now.

Illinois' tournament resume also just took a massive boost. Illinois now owns 6 Quad 1 wins, tied for the 3rd most in the country. Illinois is building a phenomenal resume and is setting themselves up to be a 2 or 3 seed come Selection Sunday. The committee loves to see teams who can win away from home, and Illinois is 5-0 on the road and has one of the nation's best wins. If Illinois can earn a protected seed, they might be fortunate enough to get the Saint Louis - Chicago - Indianapolis path for a National Championship. This is shaping up to be the year Illinois breaks through and goes back to the final four.

Illinois has sent a message to the nation that they are legit National Championship contenders.

Illinois takes on Washington at the State Farm Center on Thursday night at 8:00.
