Pregame Guide and Prediction: Illinois vs Oregon
Illini Football is back after a much-needed bye week to regroup and get ready to attack the back half of a loaded Big Ten schedule. Before the season, everyone would have told you this game could be penciled in as a loss. If I told you two months ago that would not be the case, you would have assumed Illinois was having a stellar season. In reality, Oregon has been arguably the most disappointing team in the entire country.
Some of it is out of their control. Donte Moore being on the receiving end of a cheap shot that gave him a severe concussion is extremely unlucky, but when Oregon comes into the season as the #2 team in the country and one of the favorites to win the National Championship, having two losses before November is not going to cut it.
The Ducks have their backs against the wall and will need to win out in order to earn a bid into the final rendition of the 12-team CFP. What an opportunity Illinois has in front of them to get one step closer to a bowl berth and knock a team out of the CFP in the process.
Oregon is 4-2 with losses to Oklahoma State and UCLA. Oregon's roster is slowly being depleted due to injuries and off the field issues. Their wide receiver room is incredibly thin following Evan Stewart's DUI. Jeremiah McClellan is out with an injury.
Dylan Raiola is getting the start. He came in for Dante Moore in the USC game and played well. But in his first week as a starter, Raiola put together one of the worst performances in the history of the sport against UCLA from a quarterback. The Ducks turned to Brock Thomas from Eugene, Oregon to start against Nebraska, but he was not any better. Raiola ended up finishing the game and led a game winning drive against his former team.
Oregon has a pretty solid duo in the backfield with Illinois native Dierre Hill Jr. and Jordan Davis. Oregon will probably be looking to feed these guys early and often to avoid putting Raiola in position to turn the ball over.
On defense, Oregon is loaded with talent and future NFL players. Matayo Uiagalelei is a game wrecker in the backfield. On the other side of the line is Teitum Tuioti, who was an All-B1G third teamer a season ago. Koi Perich transferred in from Minnesota but hasn't filled the void left by Dillon Thieneman all that well. Perich has only been great as a run stopper.
If Illinois wants to win this game, it will undoubtedly come down to whether or not the defense can force turnovers or negative plays. Remember when Illinois sacked Raiola on 3 straight plays in overtime back in 2024 to seal a victory over Nebraska? Illinois will need to bring that pressure today and force Raiola into making costly mistakes.
PREDICTION:
Illinois is typically really good coming of bye weeks, but I don't know if this bye week was a very typical one considering how much the Illini needed to fix, especially on defense. Also throwing in a freshman quarterback against a defense this talented is not very encouraging. It's very likely Clayton makes a couple of mistakes, and if Illinois wants to win, they can't turnover the ball. I do think Illinois keeps it competitive, but I still like Oregon to win.
Oregon 31-20.
